About the Mental Health Education Conference:
NAMI Gulf Coast holds an Education Conference each year in October during Mental Illness Awareness Week (MIAW). In 1990, the United Stated Congress established the first week in October as Mental Illness Awareness Week in recognition of NAMI’s efforts to raise mental health awareness. Since then, mental health advocates from across the county have joined together during the first full week of October in sponsoring many kinds of activities.
The MIAW Conference has become a NAMI Gulf Coast tradition. It presents the opportunity for us to partner with other individuals and organizations to educate and empower the community. Our hope is that participants will go forth inspired to change attitudes and change lives. Ultimately, through this awareness, education, and advocacy event, we hope to create compassion and understand with regard to mental illness, as with any other illness, and erase the stigma associated with it.
The conference will include tracks targeted for individuals with a mental illness, family members, caregivers, mental health professionals, and community members. The event offers a variety of educational sessions, a multitude of educational opportunities, and the possibility of eliminating the often confusing mental health care boundaries and shared perspectives of understanding for professionals, families and community, ultimately creating a stronger local mental health community.
