In 1988, Carolyn Karbowski founded NAMI Gulf Coast. This was a result of a two-year journey after her son was diagnosed with schizophrenia and she discovered there were few services, no educational programs and no support for families struggling with mental illness. Determined to make a much-needed change, Carolyn began to organize services that would benefit those affected by mental illness. NAMI Gulf Coast has evolved from a volunteer-run, grass roots organization to a vibrant education and support agency that is known throughout the state of Texas as one of the leading NAMI affiliates.
